SAVE Britain's Heritage is delighted to announce the appointment of Ben Derbyshire to the charity's governing board.

Ben’s appointment comes on the back of the high profile and long running M&S Oxford Street campaign, spearheaded by SAVE on heritage and sustainability grounds which we fought at public inquiry and has brought the issue of unnecessary waste of historic buildings to the forefront of public discussion. Other major cases include the 18th century Bevis Marks synagogue in the City of London, highly controversial plans for Liverpool Street Station, an industrial mill complex in south Devon and our campaign to boost listed building protection in Scotland.

2025 is our 50th anniversary year and we will be announcing a series of exciting events across the UK in the New Year. We will also be launching a new website and brand.

Ben is non-executive Chair of HTA Design LLP, a leading multidisciplinary design practice specialising in housing and placemaking. He is a Commissioner of Historic England. He serves on the London Advisory Committee, Shrewsbury Flaxmill Delivery Board and is chair of the Historic Places Panel. Ben is President of the London Forum of Amenity and Civic Societies and was President of Royal Institute of British Architects from 2017 – 2019.

Ben says: "I have been a long admirer of SAVE’s important work, which becomes ever more crucial at a time of climate crisis when we must conserve embodied carbon. Never has it been more important to make the case that heritage preservation adds both economic value and social wellbeing. So, it is with a mixture of pleasure and pride that SAVE has asked me to become a Trustee ahead of the 50th anniversary year for the organisation.”

Eric Reynolds, chairman of trustees for SAVE Britain's Heritage says: "Ben is one of the most thoughtful architects of our time. He cares unselfishly about society and the buildings that shelter and serve us. His wide knowledge of the built environment, both that about to be built, and that that is our heritage, makes him a very important addition to the trustees of SAVE.”

Henrietta Billings, director of SAVE says: “We are delighted that Ben will be joining the board of SAVE. The wealth of experience he brings as a practicing architect together with high profile advocacy for the historic environment will be an invaluable addition for our work promoting the viable re-use of old buildings. We’re looking forward to working with him.”

SAVE campaigns to save and re-use old buildings that people care about across the UK. We intervene to help prevent needless waste or decay by bringing together architects, engineers, planners and investors to offer viable alternative proposals. Through our actions we raise public awareness about the benefits of reusing historic buildings at the heart of our communities, and where necessary, and with expert advice, we take legal action to halt demolition.
